Leadership Training

On April 28-29, 2008 a Reality Check programs was held at Bullock County High School sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the USBC Chamber of Commerce.

Reality check is a hands on, real life simulation which gives young people grades 11-12th the opportunity to take a brief glace into the future (age 25 and the sole primary support of their household) in a fun and exciting way.

Reality check addresses financial management on a level that the students understand. It helps the students learn how to budget and prioritize, write checks & balance a checkbook, understand the importance of education, appreciate their parents responsibility and save for retirement and emergencies.

The students chose an occupation and home situation (married, single, children, etc). Their monthly income was determined by their occupation which determined the amount of funds available to them after taxes.

The program then provided them with 12 life stations such as banking, child care, housing, transportation, food, clothing, etc.. The students then took their monthly income and paid for the items they would be budgeting for as adults. These booths were managed by local chamber volunteers who assisted the students with their purchases and helped them evaluate their choices during the process.

We would like to say thank you to our Chamber members who volunteered- Nicole Nichols, Sherry Russell, Mary Anne Williams, Curtis Stell, Kinia Curtis, Gwen Franklin, Vena Lee, Sharon Franklin, Elizabeth Smithart, Joyce Perrin and Bertha Poe. George Tabb the local Bullock County Extension Service Agent coordinated with Deana Barnes from their Auburn office. These were volunteers from local businesses: Wayne Farms, Attorney Smithart, Promiseland Realty, Memory Chapel Funeral Home and others. We appreciate the continued support of Superintendent Keith Stewart, Principal Lowe and the Bullock County School Board for allowing us to continue interacting with the students in an effort to enrich their educational experience and advance entrepreneurial and life skills.

We work on providing leadership training through many avenues.
